Funny you should call him a lurch-like valet since the actor actually played lurch in the Addams Family movies that were made when we were growing up. And not to go all nerd fantastic, but in the book Imzadi there is some explanation towards Lwaxana being controlling. But the flip side to that is that Troi actually does have some balls to stand up to her in the book and it's the REASON she joins starfleet, so her reaction her would make even less sense. But, yes, books are no cannon. Lwaxana is the shiz in every episode.

She gets dazed and out of it and manages to wander onto the bridge, but not before giving her poor son false hope by listening to his enthusiastic studies on dilithium crystal theory. My notes for this episode are a block of random letters from smashing the keyboard with rage. Goddamn everything is contagious. I’d say at least this isn’t The Naked Now, but this episode is it’s own flavor of bad. At least it’s not racist?
